Cultural Awareness & Competence is a necessity in social work practice and child welfare. It not requires self-awareness, cultural humility, and the commitment to understanding and embracing the unique characteristics of those that we serve and of ourselves.

The NASW Code of Ethics charges social workers to provide services that are

sensitive to clients' cultures and differences. This self-paced, online course will enlighten the social work/ child welfare professional regarding standards and indicators of cultural awareness and empower social workers to engage in self-reflection and self- awareness.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify ethical guidelines for cultural awareness.
  2. List indicators to evaluate cultural competency in social work/ child welfare practice.
  3. Examine the implications of personal values/ biases and how they impact cultural awareness in practice.


Upon successful completion, this course provides 2 hours of continuing education.

Terricka Hardy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, Board Certified Diplomate, and Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional. She is an appointed member of the NASW National Ethics Committee and member of the Editorial Board for the Journal for Social Work Values and Ethics. Terricka is the owner of Terricka Hardy Consulting, LLC and has trained numerous of professional and community groups in ethics, mental health, professional impairment, burnout, and self-care. Terricka has presented on local, regional, and national levels.  She is a featured contributor of The Routledge Handbook of Social Work Ethics and Values published in 2019. Terricka played an integral role in advocating for the recent 2021 changes to the NASW Code of Ethics as she lead the subcommittee in crafting self-care language to the NASW Code of Ethics.
